As the mother to two little girls, I tell them all the time that I hope they open their own businesses. I belong to the Entrepreneurs Organization, a global network of entrepreneurs that focuses on peer education, and it has been a tremendous resource for Fabulous Furballs and I. However, out of almost 130 members, there are less than 10% who are women and this number breaks my heart. It baffles me because personally I have so many friends who are amazing business women. I do notice that even amongst my friends there is a hesitancy to take their business to the next level. For some, it comes down to reaching a certain point where they have to choose a balanced family and personal life or the growth of their business. I think this is a struggle for all entreprenuers, but I notice that family tends to win out for a lot of women led businesses.
With all of the risks and pitfalls that come with entrepreneurship, why would you encourage your daughters to dive in? Well, I would because I know first hand the rewarding feeling deep inside when you create something from nothing. There is a deep sense of achievement that is far greater than your first "A" on an exam or the fastest mile you ever ran. As a woman, the customer service experience and corporate culture came naturally. Ladies are used to being hostesses and extending that kind of care when making a sale just came naturally to me. All of us have dreams for our children, our grandchildren, or the young ladies in our lives. For this fabulous mommy, it is for my girls to create something uniquely personal and share it with the world.
Dream big. Be fabulous.
